I. Some of those thoughts would eventually manifest themselves as pieces of Kang’s article, which would come out in early January and introduce much of the non-DFS world to concepts like bumhunting, computer script exploitation, and the companies’ willingness to alter rules to accommodate the top pros. Bumhunting—the practice by pros of targeting weak, casual players in head-to-head matchups—got most of the attention, but to me the biggest takeaway was the admission by the sites themselves of the degree they catered to high-volume players. Unfortunately, it was slapped with a nasty, over-the-top headline, and the DFS world felt Kang got a few things wrong—conflating bumhunting with being auto-matched by the site when lineups lock, for instance—allowing those who most needed to heed his message to dismiss his article as just another misinformed hit piece. And it wasn’t that. People who don’t want to hear bad news will find a way not to.
II. Most of these stats are publicly available, but some, like MaxDalury, buy proprietary stats at great expense from the same companies that provide data to professional sports teams.
III. If you have one standard cash lineup you deploy among all your cash games, as most players do, playing in head-to-heads over 50/50s can help you mitigate losses when you have a really bad night. For instance, if you have a bottom 40 percent cash lineup on a given day, that lineup will lose every single 50/50 or double-up it’s in. But that same lineup should lose only around 40 percent of its head-to-heads, allowing you to recoup some of those losses.
IV. Sharks such as Beep don’t even consider extreme-volume players like Saahil and Condia to be of the same species—they call them “whales” instead, because they cruise around, their maw open, gobbling up all possible action like baleen. Sharks, fish, whales—I wonder if there’s a DFS analog for jumbo shrimp.
